'First Bus Great Expedition' - walking to support Macmillan in Doncaster

  • First Bus Great Expedition challenge across the UK
  • Local team at First Bus in Doncaster took on the challenge and walked 10 miles, equalling 270,000 steps

First Bus challenged their colleagues to undertake the 'First Bus Great Expedition' to cover 5 million steps between 21st June & 5th July 2023.

The 5 million steps were an estimate of the distance between each of its bus operations across the UK.

In Doncaster, a group of drivers & managers from First Doncaster bus depot took on the challenge and walked from Doncaster Airport, following the 57a bus route through Auckley, Branton & Cantley to Doncaster Interchange on Sunday 2nd July .

A grand total of 270,000 steps were recorded covering 10 miles.

Donations were collected from colleagues and a total of £90 was collected on the day to be donated to MacMillan Cancer Support (First Buses charity of choice).

On completion of the First Bus challenge across the country, colleagues recorded a total of 39 million steps, well in excess of their target.

First Bus marked the start of the three-year partnership with Macmillan by donating an initial £10,000 with more fundraising and awareness campaigns organised to support the charity and their ‘Find the Words’ campaign, which aims to promote the use of cancer support services among men of working age.

While men represent 52% of cancer cases, only 38% of the calls to Macmillan’s Support Line come from men. This means many men are missing out on getting the support they need. Macmillan want to encourage more men to talk about their cancer experience and seek support.
